Jackattack from another thread re: a tower computer "If you travel slap it in a rackmount case and get a monitor that slides out of the rack on a tray. You can do all that with a five space rack case if you're careful."
I have been sorta looking around for a solution to moving my tower around any more info on this?

I guess I am lacking the understanding of how I can actually mount/secure the tower inside the rack case easily. Are there kits? Do I have to fashion some kind of mount? I have a couple more of these cases somewhere

Hey, jg it looks like the rack cases are for your entire computer components to fit in, looks like a project. if you check out the fingernails on the above link you'll see what JackAttack is talking about.

Sorry. Yes you would gut your existing case and transplant into the rackmount case. The huge advantage is that a rack designed case is normally quite a bit stronger than your average tower and will not flex in transit or when being hoisted around. This is very important in regards the motherboard and connected components. If you break a solder point you lose the board.

I've used a designated server rack, It didn't fit into a standard SKB type 5 unit rack case exactly (it stuck out the back end) but I could cover the front end and it had a handle which made for easier transportation. I added a shelf and a drawer for keyboard/mouse and foam for a monitor and it worked fine. I also used a smaller rack and a shoulder bag for the monitor/mouse keyboard YMMV.

Antec makes some wonderful quiet cases. They are pricey. Rosewill cases can be had from Newegg. Depending on what components your desktop has, a three space case is often sufficient. The ones I have built for others are four space cases. The key is to use as many 120mm fans as you can jam in there. Large fans set at low speed move lots of air at low noise. SKB makes several rolling rack cases. The RLX cases are not quite as deep as say the R6W so know the depth of the rack case and/or the preamps you throw in there too. I usually have the UPS/conditioning in separate cases. Thank god I don't have to deal with power drops and panels anymore!
