Hello People,

I use in-ear monitoring and I am having with volume levels.

My monitor setup is:
aux1 from a 16X4 mackie, to my 4 channel monitor mixer.
I use the 1st channel for my main mix, I use a second for a metronome.
I use the headphone jack to power my Shure EC3 headphones.

I have been using this setup for several years and love it, I will never go back to wedges!

I have no problems dialing in my drums or vocals.
My problem comes when trying to set guitars its all or nothing.

When I am doing a sound check on my snare for example,
I can easily hear the volume increase or decrease as the soundman
adjusts the level. Its easy to get it right where I want it!

With the guitars he will slowly bring up the volume and at certain point
it will come on full blast, if you back it off just a little its gone?

I often wonder if our gain structure is set right and this could be causing the problem?

It could be a dirty pot, but it all the other channels work fine.
This happens with both guitar channels.

What else could it be? Its driving me mad!

Thanks for any help!
Kevin

Does it happen to the guitar on a channel you have verified to work? Have you plugged in a satisfactory instrument to the pot that is dodgy? Have you plugged a regular pair of headphones into the jack feeding the IEM? Tried different cables? Checked the cable connectors?

You have to try some of this first. Until then you don't know where to begin. Also, what is your monitor mixer? Your Mackie: is it the CR1604, VLZ*1604/1642 or Onyx 1640/1620.
