Me and my band are trying to record some songs but we're having a hard time achieving good recording quality. We're a garage rock band so we're not looking for a clean perfect sound but still... We'd really like to get better results. The mai problem is that what's being recorded is NOTHING like what we hear in the room. Fuzzy, dirty guitars sound weakly distorted. We're on a REALLY tight budget so I thought I could tell you all the equipment we're using so you could give me advice on what our priorities shoud be. We are using:
One cheap Behringer mic on guitar amp 1
One cheap Behringer mic on guitar amp 2
One cheap Behringer mic on bass amp
One cheap Behringer mic as overhead 1 for drums
One cheap Behringer mic as overhead 2 for drums
One cheap Behringer mic on the kickdrum (is this the correct name?)
One Shure Green Bullet for vocals
One mixing table Behringer eurorack mx 1602
We're recording with Magix music studio 3.00 on Windows Vista with a NVIDIA HDMI High Definition soundcard.
So, in your opinion, what should be our top priority? We're considering substituting our two guitar amps for 2 SM57s because our guitar sound is coming out all wrong but maybe the problem is elsewhere.

The SM57 is a fabulous mic for guitar amps. If you aren't getting the sound you like then try moving the mic position. Try it right on the cloth pointing at the cone; 6" off the cone pointing at the cone; 2" inches from the outside edge pointing at the speaker itself; keep moving it until you find the sweet spot. As to the rest, it's difficult to say not knowing which Behr#$ mic's and how you are positioning them. Basically, recording is all about mic position and proper gain staging.
Your biggest problem however is that you don't have an audio interface listed. Without it you aren't going to get very far.

Well then you are probably looking for a USB interface, I really can't recommend one from personal experience never used a USB interface. Some of the ones available are M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8x8, Line6 UX8, Tascam makes one, these are mid level units a big step up from your soundcard not quite "pro" but you'll have to do your own research.
