Hi all-
I'm reconfiguring my DAW, which (unfortunately) has to sometimes double for other non-DAW uses.
I have kept the 2 separate up to this point by keeping the 2 OS's on different HDs using a removeable drive bay. Worked great, but the bay fan is too loud.
My thought is to take out the removable bay and install all 3 drives permanently like this:
HD1: DAW OS and APPS
HD2: Samples
HD3: Audio
My question is this - if I want to set up a dual boot for my non-audio OS and apps, should it be on a partition on HD1 or HD2?

depends on how big HD1 is, I just setup a dual boot with 2 drives in it, one is used for the O.S. and the other just for audio. I split the first drive (O.S. drive) into 2 partitions....each one being 20 gigs, installed the appropriate O.S. in each....edited up the boot.ini and all was happy.

Any disadvantage to having them both on one drive.

when I setup a drive I always leave about 2 gigs un partitioned.
when I setup a drive I always leave about 2 gigs un partitioned....that way if your O.S. gets corrupt you have some space on the drive for a fresh O.S. install to get that drive up and running. If the drive itself crashes well....you have bigger problems to address, hope ya backed up :)

If you have good ventilation running in the system you really don't need them.
Drive bays, depending on what make you get are usually efficient enough with air space to provide adequate room for air to flow through without trapping heat inside of it.
I personally like doing swappable drives for each OS.
I've never been a fan of dual booting as one OS will always see the other one.

I'm no expert like Opus, but I'm currently working with a dual boot configuration on the same OS, and everything is working OK: I have the dual boot system set up so that I can have Win98SE on partition number one (for Pro Tools LE 5.1.0) and Win XP Pro on the other (for Pro Tools LE 5.3.1) ; I don't know, but so far I havent had any issues with OSs conflicting with each other, as 98 doesn't even know of XP existance, and XP treats the 98 partition just like a normal HD. Untill all apps and plugins have been updated (in the Pro Tools land) for XP I'll keep it this way.
P.S. : To Scenaria, what did you edited in the boot.ini ? is it something required to make the system work even beter? I didn't do anything, but I'd like to know.

I only edited the boot.ini for my partition names so that I could identify them easier. mostly because I had two copies of XP installed and its difficult to see which one is which as they are both called the same in the boot manager. (idiot proof for an idiot like me :)

If you use a 98 admin partition you don't even have to install anything just copy the dos version files to the drive.
Bootmagic 8 says it can do this but can't.
I'm using a triple boot win98se/xp/xp setup you know it's working properly when the xp setup states unknown for the other already installed OS's and each partition has a completely different pagefile.
