Hi,

I been mastering sound for about 15 years now and send out to cut allot of vinyl. I do about 100 Lacquer Sides a year. With all the money I spent on cutting sides I could of owned a couple Lathes by now including trial and error.

I been seeing some used Lathes for sale on eBay and other sites, and I am looking for a good engineer to guide me through this and help set my system up. I'm located in South Florida.

I wanted to get some suggestions from you guys on what to spend for a Lathe and Amps, Meters etc. Should I go with Belt Driven or Direct Driven Lathe? I've heard stories from both Sides. Nuemann, Scully, Westrex? Zumaudio cutting computer? Should I jump into DMM instead of cutting Lacquer? What is the bare bone system I need to start getting my feet wet?

I also don't mind piecing a system together and taking time to do it. I am not in a big rush. Any Suggestions, Pricing and Contact info would be great help. I understand it's not an easy process to set up a Lathe.

Thanks
Ruben

Today I spoke to Albert from ICS (International Cutting Head Service).
He has about 10 systems for sale. He wants to sell me a complete Cutting System consisting of a Neumann VMS 66 with a VG-74 Rack and a SX-74 Cutting Head. He is asking $20k for this set Up. Does this sound Ballpark? I am also considering a Zuma Computer for spacing.

He also Has a VMS 70 with a SAL-74 Rack with the SX-74 Cutterhead that he is asking $30k for.

Any Suggestions guys?

Thanks
Ruben

Thanks for your reply Steve,

He told me there was absolutely no differrence in quality between the 2 set ups. He said the reason the other system was more expensive because it was more in demand. So I figured "More in Demand" must mean better sound but he assured me not. From what I been reading up on, is that the 68 Cutterhead can handle a louder signal to give you a louder pressing than the SX-74. Any comment on that?

Thanks

Cutting Heads

Defiatley go fo the SX74 with the Sal 74b cutting amps,And i would not lose to much sleep over the zuma computer you can work with the standard varigroove that comes with the lathe (assuming that the varigroove works ok)Also i have heard that the people who make the Zuma varigroove are more interested in selling you a new machine than repairing an old one If you have any more questions you can email me direct.
