Has ANYBODY had any luck with this? ...So hard to get a decent sound because of the piss poor conversion. But every now and then I'll hear something passable (usually major label)
Anyone find any techniques that work?

Try this, find a track that sounds great at full quality. Record the output of it as a myspace mp3. check the frequency response of the compressed version and eq your track to compensate for it. keep in mind that if there isn't any information above a certain frequency on myspace, filter it out and save yourself some bandwidth. Mp3's make you the director of traffic fitting 1411kbs of traffic into 128kbs of space :)
hope it helps.

I've found it's mostly just the bitrate you record at.
Since they degrade MP3's already (some might be 128, 192, etc etc) to stream, I've found that changing the bitrate to 320 will make it come out clear on myspace.
Hope this helps.
