ok, this might sound really stupid, but I'm just curious. I was wondering what would happen if, using a simple 2 XLR input m-audio interface, you were to : take the incoming XLR input, send it out if the TRS line output to whatever processors you had, then send it back into the 2nd XLR input? once again, I apologize for the stupidity, some friends of mine were debating. So, is this possible? would the newly processed signal be decent enough to record? any thoughts would be great. Thanks!

Thats pretty much correct, although its all outboard processing and the M-Audio is a preamp, so I'm guessing it would have to be first in the chain? Wouldn't the signal be too low if it was put into the outboard processers first? Does this clarify the question? If what you said (signal >processor > xlr input) works, that would be amazing.
Basically we were trying to find a way to make this work using an M-Audio Mobile Pre USB (2 inputs), a BBE sonic maximizer, and an MDX 2600. Once again I apologize for the confusion and appreciate the response. Thanks

Do you want to treat the sound before it goes into the PC ? I am assuming the answer to that is yes.
Ok here is what you are asking:
Mic>>xlr1 on M-audio pre
Line Out on Maudio >>compressor>>sonic max>>to line in on maudio
If that’s what you want, the answer is NO.
Unless you want to hack into the M-audio circuit board. If you do then it is possible to send the preamp output to the compressor and maxy, then return it back into the line input. However most people are not willing nullify there warranties. Understandable.
Also if you do that you will have the raw signal on channel one and the affect sound on channel 2. So in your DAW you could select either or both.

Now, if you were able to place some kind of attenuating device after the maxy, then it might work.
Then the signal would look like this:
mic, preamp, compressor, maxy-pad, then m-audio...

Why ? can't you you just put the processor before the first XLR input?
