I've already seen that mic on ebay, and it would be an amazing present. In fact it's probably the best present he could ever receive. Even if he hates the 87 it would still be an amazing gift!

One of my colleagues has a gold 87 in his studio (he does voice-over work) and it is one of his favorite mics. Always has "WOW" factor with the clients and he says it sounds better than some of the other 87s he has (although he may say that for what it cost him).

I'd say he's a pretty lucky guy if you'll buy him that for a gift.

its the same as a u87ai except its got a gold diaphragm, gold internal parts, and a gold shockmount. Retail about $4k in '98. Did I mention that its made of gooooooooold? :lol:

Old thread but its of interest to me. Does the "gold" actually sound that much better?
