just kidding, but I do need some advice on gates, On my last project that i did the drummer really hit the snare hard, and the tom mics were picking up waaay too much snare, to the point where I didn't even need a snare mic, I tried to use the gates in my dps24 and they couldn't handle the snare being so loud, so I just ended up automating the tom channels to turn on and off when the drummer hit the toms. But my question is, are there any good 2-4 channel gates out there that I can control this problem with or would I be better off automating the channels to turn off when toms aren't being hit?

Drum micing consists of alot of options, but the damn things are gonna bleed into the other mics! Drums are extremely loud, and even the worst dynamic mics will pick up drums from 20 feet away!
If you can, mount supercardioid mics facing away from the snare. But my advice, you can quiet a snare down and get some cool sounds at the same time. Try placing a small towel under the snares between the resonant head and the stand. This will muffle the snares and give a really cool short popping sound.
But if you must know how I do it, I use an AT 3035 and just pick the whole set up! The thing sounds great with my drumset, and if we're recording someone elses kit, we will assess the situation and determine the best course of action.

Also enables you to compress the crap out of them and make them extra fat without having all the overbleed when not silenced. Just make sure that you fade out the audio at the tail ends of the tom hits. But please don't take away the snare mics!!!
