I was going to say, 'like a condom to a Baptist Preacher...' but it's really more like the front door to your recording. Most people don't pay much attention to the door itself, some are better than others, they'll all get you in and your first impression of the place 1) is based in large part on the front door and 2) lasts a lot longer than you'd think.

...like a rifle to an infantryman.

This is my microphone. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My microphone is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.

My microphone without me is useless. Without my microphone, I am useless.

My microphone is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weakness, its strength, its parts and its accessories. I will keep my microphone clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will...

The RIGHT mike to a recording engineer is this:

In his mind, it is a choice more intimate than the french tickler for his wife,
In his hands, it is a tool more powerful than a crowbar in the hands of Tanya Harding
In his gut, it creates a feeling of lust deeper than than between a teenage boy and a J-Lo poster
In his eyes, it is a sight more beautiful than
all the LED's in 72 input SSL console combined
In his ears, it is a sound more beautiful than the soffit-mounted Genelecs in the studio next door.

Okay, I'll play along:

... the window to the world.

... the aural equiv. of a photographer's lens.

... The engineer's paintbrush

... where everything begins Forgetting about the sound source itself and the environmental conditions (acoustics) for a moment, if you screw up here (with the mic), all the down chain stuff in the world will never completely be able to correct your error.

... worth more as a paperweight if said "engineer" doesn't know how to use it.

... an electro-mechanical transducer that converts acoustical waveforms into analogous electrical signals.

Looking forward to reading what everyone else has to say....

Apology accepted. Actually, *I* should have thought of that. ;)

Like a bananna to a bath house patron.
Like duct tape to a gerbil owner.
Like batteries to a madam.
Like doughnuts to a cop.
Like Ginger to Fred..
Like Felix to Oscar.
Like a bible to a priest.
Like Sake to a Geisha
Like a feather to a stripper.
Like a Lutz to an ice pair.
Not always necessary...just another tool.
