hello everyone. I just joined this website today. You all seem to be very helpful when it comes to mic decisions so I have a question for you all.

I am starting to buy mics and I want the best. I want mics that will last and I don't really need to upgrade from my original purchace. I have about $1300 dollars to spend and I can't decide on whether I should get one Neumann u87 and then save up again or should I get a sm57, Sennheiser 421(3 of them) and a Audix D6. Both options spend all the money. But what is more important?

Also as a side question, what would be better AKG 414B ULS or a Neumann u87?

1st-------Welcome to Recording.ORG
2nd-------It is good that you plan to spend some real cash on good pro gear. I personally own 3 SM57's, and 1 D6, I think very highly of both of them.
However if you want great results.....get high quality pre amps. Great River, Avalon, UA, API , or any really high end pre amp. That way all of your mics will sound AWESOME and really really BIG
Cause even if you get a $1200-$1300 mic, it will only sound as good as the mic pre that is driving the signal. Hope you understand what I am trying to say
3rd-------use good quality cables, cheap ones WILL hurt your signal structure
I suggest Mogami cables---they are the best
Monster cables are O.K.--they are better than most

I want to focus on vocals. But eventually I want to have everything. I want a mic that is great all around (mostly for vocals and a room mic), but for the most part can have a warm, REAL, sound to the vocals. What are good pre's that can really help me in that department as well? Thanks again for your suggestions.

would you say that would be a strong start or am i missing something or have a gone too far?

I think you could do a lot with that group of gear. The AKG 414's are very versatile IMO. You can use the stereo pair to record anything from a string quartet to a rock drum kit. Even through Mackie pres I thought they sounded like I had ears wired to the board. Also use one for vocals if the U87 doesnt fit. I would probably get the 414 pair before the 87. I just think you could do a whole lot more with a pair of good LD condensors than with a single 87.

For vocals and room pick up, IMO the U87ai will be perfect. I have had a lot of different LD mics including a vintage C24 and I have found the U87 to work best for room and ambience pick up. I also like it a lot on vocal. It has a ver definable sonic signature that it adds to vocal .... often associated as "that sound".
