post a link to a Weezer track so I can hear what you are shooting for?

As an example I followed this:

awesome thank you! I definately hear what you're saying about the panning, these right now are 68% L and R. I had them originally at 100% so I think shooting for the middle of those should satisfy. I'm also thinking the toms are panned too wide as well. What are your thoughts on the toms? Not sure if Im liking the tones really, but I am really used to working with metal and going for that "cannon" tom sound

Yeah ditch the toms sound it is distracting and does not match up or compliment. I like this overall it is a good song and mix. I do think the bass and drums could compete with guitar a bit more in the mix. Sounds like the guitar might be masking out some of the drums and bass, drums sound a tad in the background at times. I really like the tone on the guitar and bass. The drums are good too, just the tom thing is getting to me. The toms could use more dampening and sound a bit boomy. Nice track and good Job!

Edit: Also don't be afraid to darken the EQ of the guitars just slightly.:cool:

You need to put some major compression on the bass drum and then gate that. Right now it sounds like a duck trying to swim in mud. So it's not all that it's quacked up to be. But then again you might want to farm that out also LOL. I just couldn't let that go... sorry. But I guess I let that go? LMAO. A perfect need for outsourcing. You don't need a percussionist, you need a psychiatrist. No! I need the psychiatrist! Let me be perfectly clear about that. Because your recording isn't. And those guitars need more than just some panning. They need treatment. Give them something to smoke and they'll be fine. In other words, you'll need some stereo digital effects for each one of guitars, independently of each other. They'll need some additional equalization also. Right now they're just irritating when they could be monstrous. And that requires some work, some experimenting, some tweaking, some playing around... hopefully with your girlfriend and not somebody else's. Ask your girlfriend how you should make it sound. Or your boyfriend. Rockford Illinois? I know some folks who Rockford, and others who rock Chevy in Illinois. And I know others who just plain left. Which was the right thing to do. Even though I'm a Democrat which would be the left thing to do.

Either way this is a TURD that needs lots of polishing.

In defense of the OP's search for Weezer, I think that's the sound of Weezer lol. Its no HD sound or even close. Quite low end and poor IMHO.
So we don't steer him off Weezer path, be sure to listen to the video I posted, I think he's closer than not..

To make it sound like Weezer is one way too look at this mix. I think this mix is actually a bit less muddy than most Weezer tracks, but then OP's mix is really bright. The guitars are just sticking too much in front of the mix and are way too bright for me to compare to a Weezer guitar sound. This sounds more Foo Fighter like guitar sounds to me...

The mix should be getting the bass drum thumping right down the middle Fat and Solid with a consistent snare. The bass guitar needs to be right there in center holding it down w/ the drums. The bass guitar sounds good but is not in there solid and deep in step w/ the drums. The toms are louder than anything on the set ever is... That was my first complaint and it is something the OP knew was a problem. But yeah... Hard pan those guitars as much as possible making room for that bass drum, snare and bass guitar. The guitars do need something to smooth them out and blur them down a little bit. A darker tone but really darker in the scheme of panning. I would like to know how these guitars were recorded and tracking layout etc. That would help anyone here give better suggestions too. Update a new track to let us hear your progress too. Keep it going. thumb

Reference this track from Weezer on Pinkerton since it is a constant rumble the whole way through the song.

Wow that is so unimpressive sounding. And kids go to expensive schools to make things sound this bad? Now I know I'm getting out of the business. I was just waiting around for Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer or George Gershwin to come back in style. I mean like keep creating original music when it's not really worth listening to? Just pay the damned publishing royalties and you can play some real music, with real melodies and stuff like that. Something might actually require some real talent? But we can't have that because everybody will feel cheated. So just keep lowering the bar.

In fact, this track here sounds better than Katy Perry, Justin Beiber, Lady Gaga etc etc... combined! And it merely a cover that I hope they had to still pay royalties for recording. You will never see such great musicians like the one's in the past. I really appreciate it all and I know that music these days is on life support.
