For one, I can tell it's over compress: when the drum starts, the volume of the guitar drasticly go down. You need to keep some dynamics, it will seem more alive. Try a slower attack on the compressor.

The vocal is a bit off time a few places and some notes could be tuned, but mostly the interpretation could have more life. Since the melody is often on the same notes, you gotta play with rithmics and dynamics to transmit the emotions. A signer is kind a like an actor. you need to feel the words and the storry.

if you post a less compress version, it will help us hear more of what's going on and direct you better.

Sound like some solid advice, to breath more life in to it ! work on the dynamic and with the singer :)

This chicken is choked to death! Like pcrecord stated, there is too much compression. Slowing down the attack is not enough to breathe life back into it, it may be too late to do so. If you used a stereo bus compressor across the main mix and THAT was what we are hearing getting beaten up by the drummer (not sure, but...), than try to back off the ratio, raise the threshold, and don't let the gain reduction spank more than , say, 6dB from the peaks. EVER.
You may be surprised by how much "life" you can bring back to the mix by backing off some on that , let the peaks come through.
I have been using compressors ever since 1969 when I was 14 and built one from a Popular Electronics magazine article.
I have never been the same since then ...:) By the same token, I am stunned by the mis-use of such a misunderstood process these days. People think it's a "magic bullet"... it ain't. But you're learning that, aren't you?

I was you using a comp on the main mix to glue everything together, and now i can really hear it to that the track is really compressed so im gonna start over and take smal steps get the dynamics flowing.

but do you guys have any tips on how to get the vocals to sound better in this mix ?

besides the technical things like pitch, and singing w/ more conviction/fuller lungs, i'd try some reverbs and delays, and then perhaps some distortion like from a sound toys decapitator, to help them sound more like there w/ the music, as opposed to sounding very separated. maybe use multiple layers/harmonies, to create some push/pull, or tension/release in the mix itself.

Use less compression, remove muddy frequencies meaning use the EQ and remove unwanted frequencies rather than boosting all over the place,
use high pass filters wherever possible :)

About vocals, use a bit of delay/reverb, remove the noise (if you can record again with no/less noise) and again use subtractive EQ as mention above.

Mixing is a learning process so if you have lots to fix don't let yourself down !
