Okay so ive been looking for a place online to ask a few questions and learn a lot and this seems to be the place.
Okay I'm looking to set up a small studio in my house with my existing equipment and some new things, i have a few questions so here is my first.
I recently got a copy of Pro Tools LE but i do not have the Digidesign hardware.
I use this with an Mbox at college but i feel they are made rather cheap..
Anyway my problem is that on start up it is looking for the hardware from Digidesign but obviously i do not have this.
I do own an EMU 0404 and i currently use that with my Macbook which is my main computer for now so i was hoping to use my EMU with Pro Tools & I'm wondering how to do this?
Is there any way round not using digidesigned stuff? if not i was looking and the mbox2 mini (i think thats it, the USB pen drive thing) and was wondering if i use that to open pro tools could i then go tell pro tools to use the EMU 0404 as the main imput and soundcard?
I also have another question:
If i want to upgrade to a desk with mixer with faders and say 12 mic/ 1/4inc inputs how do i hook that up to my computer so that my computer knows that i am recording on each channel at the same time?
Is is possible to plugin a mixer into my EMU unit and have it see the 12 or so channels at once?
My dad also has a few old rack units so how do these get hooked up exactly?
Im hoping to build up a mini studio in a spare room of my house so is there anything else i mainly need?
i have a bunch of equipment but nothing super important (racks, drum machines, effects, controllers, keys..etc) so i was wondering is there is any essential things i need?
Thanks!

Pro Tools comes free with any new Digi hardware purchase. It cannot be run without it. You need an MBOX, 002r or 003r or any of their control surfaces.
Check Ebay for best prices on used gear. Hope you didn't pay too much, because the hardware you buy will likely come with what you've purchased already if its legit.

You should return the PT LE disk and get your money back from the person who sold this to you. He or she may not have been aware of it, but selling the software without the hardware is a violation of the license. I did not mean my original statement to you to be an accusation - simply a statement of fact. The policy of the owner of this board is that we will not help those with unlicensed software.
Your second question is an interesting one and one that gets batted around here and elsewhere. It turns out that the number of "control surfaces" that will let you do what you want to co is really quite limited. There are a number of digital mixers on the market, but I'm not sure that they will work in the way you want with the equipment you have. (Lots of research ahead for you.) I think that most of the people with low cost studios mix "in the box" using a mouse. I'm not completely confident of that so I'm going to do a poll in another thread.
