XPpro/PC

Currently using Acid pro 4.0

Goal:
Record vocals, maybe make beats. Genre: Rap, R and B

Looking for: Something better and stronger than Acid Pro

Gear I have so far: Behringer mixer, Shure ksm27, Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum Pro, MAudio Bx8s, monster cables, maudio keystation 88.

Also plan on getting an echo or m-audio sound card

Heh, can't afford pro tools, don't really need it right now, but I do need something a lot better than Acid. Especially since I just got the midi controller. And by the way, what should I get next, a sound module or will the software be good enough for now?

But yea I really need something to put me in the right direction

I'd say, by all means loose the soundcard and get an Echo Layla or Mia if budget is tight.
And get the Sound Forge 7.0/CD Architecht 5.0, combo. Those are made by the same people that make Acid so they will integrade well with Acid.
Sound Forge is one of the most powerfull audio editor you'll find.
And CD A 5.0 means you can finish a demo or maybe even make the master your self when you'll be good at it.
Lots of retail stores like GC and Zzounds sell them in combo packs.
You allready have one of the best loop manipulation app out there.

how about my midi controller, don't I need support for it. Example: Sound module or a software. Which should I get first?

And software... which one is good for midi, I mean below pro tools, is it Reason, Sonar, Cubase or what? Acid's okay, but I think the programs I mentioned are better. But which of these is the best.

I know I should get a new soundcard. Probably in a month or so. I think I wrote that I might be getting an echo soundcard or m-audio.

Sonor and Cubase would allow you to record vocals and do any sorta MIDI thing (beat making and such) and will support VST instruments (software sound modules) which there are alot of great ones for free even. You can try these programs out for free as well to get a better idea. I personally think they are much better option then Protools.

What midi controller did you get? Ussually you can plug it into your computer via either USB or game port (MIDI cables) and sonar or cubase will recognize it.

Go with Cubase SX 2.02. You'll be compatible with Pro Tools (it's the OMF file support system that makes them compatible). I'm still using SX 1.06 for now (version 1 was'nt compatible), but will upgrade very soon. My first S/W package was Cakewalk Pro Audio 6.0 back in the day. I ran that until 7.0 came out. I kept that version until I did a competitive upgrade with Cubase VST 3.07. Then that lasted until SX hit the streets. I fell in love with the Steinberg products because of the visual layout & how stable and reliable it is. I feel more confident when recording because the computer works flawlessly. I'm using an Echo Layla 24/96 audio interface too along with a MOTU MTP A/V for midi. What I put in comes out with mirror imaging.

The $600 Digitranslator app is needed to convert OMF files into PT sessions.

So OMF doesn't make it compatible unless the studio has invested in Digitranslator.

OMF can be imported into video apps like Avid, and Final Cut Pro.

ACID Pro 4 is great software for what you want to do.

I'd say get Reason and use Rewire to use it within ACID so that you have everything you need. ACID is the best for looping and it supports VST instruments as well so you wouldn't really be lacking in anything you need or want to accomplish.

Are you having trouble with ACID, something to make you think it isn't good enough?
