I have an Alesis Studio32 board with unbalanced TRS inserts on each channel and on the main outs. Like most boards of this (low) caliber, you can't just terminate these things on a patch panel. Something has to be patched in (like a RNC) or else I get no signal. My question is, what would be the most professional way of utilizing these types of insert points? Should I normal them on my patch panel, or what? What type of insert points do higher end boards use? Are they switched? Balanced?

Well...if you run the "insert" point to a normalled patchbay, then the signal will have an extra few feet it has to travel...though with a desk like that I doubt you'd notice any significant loss of audio quality.

A normalled bay may indeed be the most pragmatic method of handling this sort of thing. Either that, or TRS tails on all of your outboard gear so you only use the patch points required for each song...

Good luck!!
