SM57 always gets honorable mention..

So what’s the deal with this mic? Why does it always get mentioned with such praise? I was just curious because I bought one about 14 years ago (and still have it). I don’t recall what I paid for it but I don’t think it was all that expensive.

I never use mics anymore and haven’t used it in probably 10 years (I record midi instrumentals only now). That and an ATM63 are the only mics I’ve ever owned... LOL They've been quietly sitting dormant in a little foam lined vinyl box for a very long time now. But I used to use them for Micing my drums during gigs back in the “day”. ;)

Anyway like I said above, I was just curious.

Beacuse they sound damn good for the price, and are consistently manufactured, but mostly because they're pretty much indestructable. I've got 2 in the rehearsal space that I bought, oh, 20 years ago. No problems yet.

They're the Ford F-150 of microphones. All products should be so well designed.
(Do you get the impression I like them?)

Strangely, I've really been enjoying using them lately as drum overheads for our really loud practice tapes. No reason that should work, but it sounds pretty cool.

Because while they rarely sound 'genius' then also never 'sound like shit'. If you're working in a hurry, you can point the damn thing in the general direction of the sound source and capture something useable.

Consistancy and reliability for under $100- is a beautiful thing.
