What you want/what you need is an external, FireWire type interface with 8 reasonable quality microphone preamps. A popular unit with quality results can be had from Presonus for between 500 to $800 US. You can still use your existing mixer for multiple microphones to be recorded to a single track or tracks.
The icing on the cake is that it will be bundled with a piece of quality LE (limited-edition) software that's multitrack oriented with great processing plug-ins. It's all that you need in one simple purchase. Then you can start your microphone accumulations.
It's all fun from here.
