So i have a classical CD coming up soon ( i mostly do rock, jazz, country, Emo etc.) I'm trying to do some upgrading before this hits. What I'm curious about is this. I'm considering the API 3124+ and the UA-2-610. Both would be killer for me normaly but how would they fair on say grand piano, cello, violin, string bass etc. I also have the NP2V that I can run pretty clean for this project as well. Should I really be looking into pendulum, grace, earthworks type stuff for classical or would the above surfice? How about summit? anyothers? ALso, i'm considering gettting the Avenson Sto-2's or Josephson C42's for this project then later for drum overheads/room mics. Any and all inteligent comments appreciated. Thanks and Rock on!

I've honestly never tried the Josephsons on classical instruments so I cannot fairly comment.
We've gotten some wonderfully warm sounds on vocals, violins, cello, arco etc with Ampex 351 pre's....tubes, massive transformers, lots'o'head room, clean and warm. We have a bunch of Neve 31115's, a coupla of 512's a John Hardy etc...but my faves are still the 351's...just depends on the gig...it's all pretty subjective

And I believe he is a moderator in the Acoustic Forum. I would get his opinion. But my thought is how many more "classical" music sessions will you be doing? Maybe rent/borrow for the session and then buy a different pre for every-day "Pop" music gigs. As far as how do the others sound ask the real playas...
