So I get an email from someone with the title WinXP Patch..

The message was Here's a WinXP patch I think you would enjoy.

Of course the attachment is a virus...do people really think I'm going to be without an Anti-virus protection? Do they not realize I am a complete computer geek and that I don't think of these things? Do they not realize I can blacklist them from my email server?

I just think some people are stupid..and deserve to be shot for attempting to be that stupid!

ok...enough venting..stupid people! lmao

Macs are not immune to viruses. Most of the hackers that write the viruses have PCs and write them for the PC. The main target of most viruses is Microsoft Outlook again due to its popularity and the really crappy programming that went into it.

That being said It is a really good idea to do the following:
1. screen all your mail for virruses.
2. DO not use Outlook for your mail
3. By a mac and never have to worry!

I have 2 PC's and 7 macs. I catch PC virruses several times per day in my inbox. None of my macs has ever been infected since I started using them in 1984.

Yep me also, although I started on Mac's round about 1995-1996. In contrast, the office PC admin computers at my "day job" where I run a small Digital Audio and Video studio are constantly on virus alert. At one time because they didn't update their virus protection software, the computers crashed. The tech called into fix 'em found over 500 virus's on the system!!!!!

Interestingly enough, on another Forum (shhh....) run by a guy called George M there is a recent topic re Apple buying Emagic. One postee has talked about Emagic loosing money because the PC platform based stuff has been impossible to protect from crackers. I have my own ideas why this is so prevelant on PC's, but I'll only cause controversy, and we wouldn't want any of that up here....would we?
:)

Kind regards

I've had the Mac for 2 1/2 years and have only picked-up one virus ... it's called Netscape LOL.
I don't open any emails except the ones that come from friends or companies that I'm currently doing business with. I'm also very careful about downloading anything. I exercise equal care on both Mac and PC. I guess the reason that almost all viruses are written for PC is because there is much more potential havoc to wreak. Last I heard, Apple only has a few percent of the market share.

Depending on what mail server program you use on a PC is how quickly the virus will attack. As Sdevino says, outlook is very easily attacked..so if you use outlook it is HIGHLY reccomended you install Norton's to protect yourself...
Yes, PC users have a lot of virus to deal with since there are more of them out there for the general office use or accounting stuff...

or you can use linux for your internet pc and have your daw networked to it. i have to say that if cakewalk, or steinberg ever made an open-source version of their software that i would do a full switch to linux granted that hardware makers such as echo, m-audio, or motu would make a linux release with it.

Doin' great. I built a new box since the last time I was here with an Abit BD7R board, with the hipoint ata133 raid. I have 4 40gig ata133 maxtors striped for data. Nice! I'm using the same system disk that I was using before with a 20 gig backup disk. I really like having 8 IDE devices on board. I put it all in an Antec server case. I need to get one of those plextor CDRWs next to finish it off. It's a handsome ANUS-like unit. :D

It's hooked up to a dsl line but I keep the DHCP service turned off except when I need to download upgrades and drivers.

No problem with virus protection. The company has NAV corporate.
