I'm about to buy a new DAW to replace my PC.

My shopping list is:

1 Dual Processor Mac (g4 or g5)
1 PreSonus FirePod ($600)
2 Mackie HR624 Monitors ($900)

My question is, will a dual g4 (1.0 or 1.2 mirror drive door) be a solid fast Logic 7 machine? I'm recording Rock/Punk/Synth music with pleanty of Waves Plugins so I need a fair amount of power, around 30 tracks with eq/comp and a few soft synths, and reason, and pleanty of buses and aux's.

If I get the G4 I can afford get the Mackie Monitors, if I get a Dual G5, I Have to stick with my Logitech z680 thx sound system thats really hard to get a clear mix with (but sure sounds sweet watching LOTR icon_cool.gif ).

I'm not against selling the g4 in a few months for the g5 if I need it, macs hold their value really good. But if I'll need it from the get-go I'd rather just get it now.

I had a Dual G4 1.2 with Digi001's on Pro Tools LE, and the performance was ok, nothing amazing, but I liked it much more than my Athlon64 PC. But the performance was presumably due to Digidesign, Logic seems much more optimized on the mac platform.

Any help would be awesome, thanks,

-Kevin

if i was to choose between a faster computer and logitech speakers i would get new speakers.... even if it meant using an atari....

and yes logic is far better optimised for macs than anything else..... too bad i hate it... but that shouldn't stop you

the g4 is great computer.... and when you can afford it.... the g5 is even greater........

Yep- If you buy the G4 you will be replacing it soon enough- Although I can get 40 tracks or so in my dual G4 867, using softsynths is pushing it and I'm thinking about making the move-

Also consider the dual 2.0 instead of the dual 1.8- that's what I'm doing- The dual 1.8 comes with 256 ram plus 500 more for a nominal installation fee. It also only has a 80GB hard drive- the dual 2.0 gives you a gig and a half of ram total plus a 160 GB hard drive. you need the extra ram and storage anyway and the 400 extra bump on the speed colum is nice-

Get the G5....
I say this because Logic 7 can use nodes.....but I believe you can only use G5s for it. Later on down the line if you can afford another G5 you can harness that power for more DSP...plus Logic is built for the G5...will be better in the long run.
Monitors are extremly important...as we all know...but if you have some decent ones....just save up for a second pair...NS-10s or something. Two or three weeks of not going out drinking...if you can handle it ;-}
my 2 cents.

if you wanna get a good mix.... get better monitors

if you can afford a g5 also.... get it..... it's better tha the g4

Whoa.. slow down now, lets not get carried away.

My mix is important, but my steady flow of Jager and red bull will NOT suffer.

Thanks for the replys everyone, I went with a dual 1.8 G5, I'll get moniters before I mixdown though.
