I think they are in the same catagory and I would not hesitate to use either. If I had both I'd try both and decide. If not I'd likely pick the dbx 786 as I have used one several times and thought it was very nice sounding unit. And since I already own two dbx 160SL's it would match up well and would look real sweet to have all that deep blue in one rack...
