Let's say you've imported an unmastered stereo mix(already at 16bit 44.1khz) into your two track editor, done some editing and then gone to "T-racks to master it. In this final step of the process is ther a need to dither to 16 bit at all?

If it processes the audio at a higher bitrate than 16 then you need to add dither even if your session is at 16.
Don't know? Throw the dither plug on your master fader after T-Racks and listen to the quiet passages, and reverb tails. Does it sound better with or without?

Don't know much about T-racks but if it can accept a file at 24 bit then I would recommend exporting your files at 24 bit. Keep them at a high bit rate and only bring it down to 16 bit after processing it in T-racks. Processing will generally sound better if done at a higher bit rate. I don't know what sort of dithering T-racks uses. If it's bad then disregard my advice.

I have heard mixed reviews but in my own personal experience I get the results I am trying to achieve (when you adjust something you hear it for sure). It can work in 24bit and 16bit (depending on the version you have I think). The dither on it doesn't leave a bad taste on the final product but if someone out there has waves gold for instance and t-racks maybe they could do a shootout comparison on the dither and let us know what happens.
