Hello everyone. Ever since I got my EMU 0404 PCI audio card, I cannot really multitask at all. This goes beyond complex multitasking. I cannot even listen to music or watch a video (with audio) while typing. As I am typing, the sound begins to click and pop, then eventually drop out. The audio then doesn't work anymore (when I click play in iTunes, it doesn't play, nor is their audio on online video streams) and I am forced to either reboot or "log off" Windows XP and back on again.
I am a home music composer and graphic designer. I wish I could listen to music and design at the same time. But when playing music or hearing audio on a video or DVD while moving graphical items around or typing, it drops out.
If I use the onboard audio or put my old SoundBlaster Audigy 2 card back in, I don't have these problems. I am just not sure what the major issue is. If it helps, this is my "Setup":
-AMD Athlon XP 3000+ CPU
-nVIDIA nForce2 ASUS A7N8X-E Delux ULTRA 400
-2 Gigs Corsair XMS DDR400 PC3200 RAM
-ATI Radeon x1600 AGP 512RAM (runs F.E.A.R like warm butter =)
-Creative EMU10K2 0404 24/96 Digital Audio PCI Sound Card + Proteus X
-5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System
-Leadtek Winfast 2000 Deluxe TV Tuner/Capture Card
-LiteON CD RW/R, ROM, DVD RW/R +- Recorder
-LiteON ROM, CD RW/R, DVD ROM
-2 Internal Hard Drives
That is what is actually hooked up in my computer right now with a couple of USB devices connected.
I am at the point now to where I want to order a new sound card even though I am pleased with the quality, latency (VSTs) and mixing console/effects of this EMU 0404.

Well the problem seems to be fixed by one of the simplest solutions possible. And it feels so nice to be typing this message post right now and be listening to music at the same time. Any other time the music would be crackling, then eventually stop and I'd have to log out of windows or reboot to be able to play an MP3 again.
Anyway, I did the ol "move the card to a new PCI slot". I have always had this 0404 card at the last/bottom slot because I didn't want the audio wires running on top of wires from other PCI card inputs. So I moved it at the first PCI slot. Still the music is playing in the background while I am typing right now. Hah. Haven't had this for about a year now. All because I wanted my audio card in the last slot. I also did a reinstall of the drivers, but I think the slot had most to do with it.
And yet the music keeps playing. I just want to keep typing while my MP3s play. Heh. Thanks guys!
