Well I purhcased an ADAT XT20 a while ago off a guy and let me tell you.. the WORST investment I have ever made.
Anyhow, here's the problem, everytime I format a tape and try to record to it, I get nothing but Err 7. No matter what tape, whether it's specified for ADAT use or not. I'm now going to try cleaning the heads but I doubt this will help as there are no ADAT tapes that I can come by in my area seeing as how it's outdated technology and the tapes i do have have already been formatted on this piece of sh*t.
Does anyone have any suggestions on decent, affordable home recording units that won't give me a f**king hard time like this piece of sh*t from hell has?

I'm never one to interupt a good ol' Shotgun whoopin', but I too
I'm never one to interupt a good ol' Shotgun whoopin', but I too own a ADAT and because I have RTFM, I seem to recall a one (maybe 2) button procedure that tells you exactly how many hours have been clocked on said machine.
I would tell you more, but mine's gathering dust and I'm not gonna fire 'er up for just that. I would be happy to sell you mine though, it still works. I still have tapes too!
Call me....

I could give you a lot of suggestions on affordable home recording equipment, but if you're too fucking stupid to read a goddamn manual then all of them are going to give you an equally hard time because the problem isn't necessarily your ADAT, it's you.
If you would kindly RTFM, which can be found here: http://www.alesis.com/downloads/manuals/ADAT-XT20_Manual.pdf
then you will see that what you guess is exactly what you should do: clean the heads. However, I implore you to also kindly read the manual section ABOUT head cleaning, because you can very easily fuck up the heads beyond any hope of repair if you do it wrong, which you may have already done.
Secondly, you should be able to find ADAT tapes at any Guitar Center by the boxfull, as well as from any one of scores of online retailers.
Don't be such a nitwit. Also, next time you buy a used piece of motorized gear (be it an ADAT, a Studer, or a lawnmower) you should ask the seller how many hours are on the unit. I'm gonna be yours has about a billion.
