Hey,

I was wondering, how do you really get to know your headphones for mixing?

I'm currently a student studying sound engineering, and have a 3 month summer break, and I want to do as much practice as I can. The recordings I do at home, arent great, and I know that. Its hard to get a great sound out of my bedroom (which is not treated acoustically). I also have no room for monitors, or money, unfortunately, and even if I did have a pair, again, untreated room!

Usually I work with a set of Sennheiser HD 201's. €30, cheap and cheerful. But, how do I really get to know these? I know listening to "reference "CD's should help but, how the hell do I know how they SHOULD sound? If I listen to them on my CD player, its got the smiley face EQ setting, and on my PC speakers, the bass speaker faces the ground! So everything sounds kind of tinny.

The frequency response of the sennhesiers isn't great either, I was wondering, would it help if I bought something more expensive instead of monitors? Like AKG 701's or something? Would this help me out at all?
