Hi, I'm looking to buy a good, versatile recording card for PC. Right now i have an audigy 2zs platinum; I realize that its not good at all for recording seeing as how it doesnt have GSIF or Pro Tools support.
I was thinking of getting the audiophile 2496 - its got a pretty good price on it for its features. What kind of limitations does this card have? I would like to do some midi work in Gigastudio and multitrack recording in Cubase sx or Pro Tools. Do you think its worth it to get the higher bitrate version, audiophile 192? Are there any other good cards around the same price range? I've heard of echo mia and terratec, but I'm not sure how they all compare.
Also, is it not a good idea to keep the audigy card in the system while having another recording card? will there be any conflicts between the two cards? It would be cool if i could use the new card for recording purposes while using the audigy for other general purposes i.e. gaming.

If you want ProTools support, you should go with the "M" series
If you want ProTools support, you should go with the "M" series of cards since they are now owned by Digidesign. With any other card you are SOL for ProTools.
I don't think ProTools is the be all end all when it comes to recording software. Just because it has the Word Pro in it doesn't mean it is. Try Steinberg's Nuendo which has as much functionality and perhaps even more than ProTools has and requires no dedicated hardware. I personally enjoy Adobe Audition 1.5 and Sony's Vegas 6 for most all of my audio work. For my video work, I use Adobe Premiere 6.5 and most recently Premier pro 1.5 along with the Sony Vegas. I also have formal training with Avid media composers but don't use those much and even though their model is referred to as " media composers" they really aren't good with audio. Maybe that's why they bought Digidesign??
