Hello everyone! I am currently trying to get things into my studio to take my recording to the next level. I would be recording drums, bass, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar.

My current setup is almost solely the Digidesign Digi-002. I have some nice mics for recording, but I know there are many more things I need besides mics to enhance the sound I am getting. Lately I have started to look at preamps and compressors thinking that this is the way to go.

What would anyone suggest for the next step to creating great recordings? Also, if products are mentioned, I want mid- level/ upper end products.

Thanks everyone and I am excited about the boards!

The pre's in the 002 are usable but not the greatest. An easy quick upgrade is to get an Onyx 800R or Presonus Digimax D8, RME Octomic II, or other 8 pack preamp with ADAT output. This expands your 002 capabilities quite a bit and is still PT compatible.

Most folk don't know how to use compressors correctly so I would recommend upgrading the preamps first and maybe you won't need the compressors as much.

I appreciate it. So you would suggest upgrading preamps over everything first?

Would you suggest getting one extremely good channel or upgrading to obtain 8 inputs. I wouldnt need more than 4 inputs at one time unless i used over 4 mics on drums. I had seen a good deal on an avalon 737 on ebay. Would that be worth the money invested. Also... which focusrite preamps do people recommend.

Again, thanks!

He has a multi channel interface. He just can't get into it without ADAT. The stock converters on the 002 are not up to the quality of the preamps I listed. They also aren't worthy of running an Avalon into IMO. Reread my post. I was pretty plain about the preamps I recommended and why.

If you have the Black Lion mod done on your 002 then perhaps the Avalon would be a worthy addition as a specialty strip. It is however a single channel and there isn't a single instrument you listed you wouldn't want multiple microphones while tracking.
