ok, here's my gameplan:
i've got a g-4 and a g5. i'm going to install my logic pro-6 on both (moving the key back and forth as i will only use one at a time).
i plan to track with the g-4 and record to my external hard-drive, and daisey chain the hard drive to the g-5 (a very long fire-wire cable will be used here).
then i will open the audio on my g-5 and mix it down there in a better sounding room and with more plugin processor power.
MY MAIN QUESTION:
the G-5's core audio card has an opticle out. anyone know of a cost effecient way of running the mix through the optical out and end up on my monitor mix? this is crucial,,, i can't afford another interface right now!
any suggestions are much apprectiated! :D

Of course the iMac G5 offers all the right ports to connect to your universe with ease. Starting with the new headphone jack that’s also a mini-optical plug. So you can watch DVDs and listen to them in 5.1 surround sound.
I don't understand how it could be both but if it is, an 1/8" TRS plug to 2 RCA's or 2 - 1/4" phone plugs should do the trick. You should check your manual.

I'm a PC guy so I don't know alot about Mac's but why do you want to daisy chain your fire-wire drive? Your Mac's have ethernet ports so why don't you use them and network them together. You could then send your music files across the network from your G4 to your G5. That's what I do, I'm setup the same way but with PC's. The benefit of this method is you'll end up with a copy on both machines aka. a backup in case something goes wrong. You don't want to lose all your hard work do you. Also ethernet cables should be a lot cheaper and are more durable than a really long fire-wire cable not to mention more reliable over long distances. If you want to just connect the two Mac's together use a cross over cable. If you want to use one or both Mac's for internet access get a hub or switch and 2 straight through cables. I recently got a 5 port Linksys 10/100 switch at Best Buy for only 10 bucks, I use it at work to trouble shoot networks and it fits in my pocket (really tiny). Sorry I can't answer your sound card question (have you checked the Mac Forums) but I'll research it and see if I can find an answer for you.
