Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. I have been getting very frustrated lately trying to figure this out. So I ditched the Audiobox USB I had because it started producing a loud noise when the phantom power was engaged for my RODE NT1, and bought a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. I was having problems with self noise from the PreSonus, not at first but a few times after recording with it. I thought buying a different pre would help, but the same noise is still there. I unplugged everything electrical that I didn't need, ran off of the Mac's battery, changed cables, tried all I could think of. My MBP is from 2007, don't know if that matters but it recognizes the Scarlett so I didn't think that was the issue. Other people record fine with itso iI am at a loss as to what the problem might be. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

That doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't perhaps something defective, especially with mics in this price range. Rode makes some decent mics, even some very good ones, but there have been complaints about some of the newer versions of this model not working correctly - even right out of the box. Rode relies on a surface mount technology, which implements a PCB. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It saves on wiring, which saves on labor, which eliminates more hands touching it than need be, and, it also helps in terms of making a much quieter mic ... but, those surface-mount PCB's can also be pretty fragile as well.

You have to remember that in-between the factory where it's made ( in Australia) and where its final destination is located ( your music store) there a lot of miles and possibly multiple shipping load-off/transfer points between those two locations.
LOL... All it takes is for one pissed-off UPS or FedEx guy who had a fight with his girlfriend before his shift started, who then and in turn he just "tosses" those boxes into his truck, and damage can occur.

I'm not saying that there is something wrong with your mic... you won't know until you test your i/o without the mic connected to see if the problem is still there or not... but if this does turn out to be the case, you certainly wouldn't be the first person to have purchased a brand-new but defective microphone.

Just a minute - are you saying you get the same noise (but no audio) if you switch off the 48V phantom power? What do you get if you firstly unplug the microphone from its end of the cable and then with the cable unplugged from the interface? It's not unknown for this sort of problem to be due to a faulty cable.
