i want to record music for the rest of my life. this isn't a on the spot decision ive been giving it a lot of thought for a long time.
Which would be better.
goto a 4 year school, institute of recording and production, or just jump right in and job shadow and try to volunteer and get as much experience as possible and just go from there...

4 years of school is overkill. Hope you're independently wealthy because this is not the business to get rich in. Only the cream of the crop gets those few good paying jobs at big companies. The business is not what it used to be years ago. You'd be better suited to just invest that "school money" in the stock market. You're looking to enter into an industry that is on the decline and becoming fragmented. I know of people who have lost their jobs at top recording studios because productions are cutting costs any way they can. They use software instead of audio engineers more and more. Budgets just keep shrinking. Lions Gate used to pay $50,000 advances for indie movies; Now and indie filmmaker is lucky if they can get $5,000. There's too many little movies being released, illegal file sharing is killing the business, etc.
