Hi, I use a 001 system with a 9600 g3 400 mhz card with 512 ram. To get my material to sound the way I would like. I find myself mixing on a tdm system. This usually costs me a few hundred dollars. I would like to upgrade to a mix plus. What I need is at least 32 tracks with a decent amount of plugins. What exactly do I need? Do I have to use an 882 even if I have a rosetta.? How many tracks can I expect to get? I have an ibm 10,000 rpm drive for audio. Is there an alternative?

Hi Keysmia,

Your IBM drive should easily provide you with more than 32 tracks, provided of course that it is dedicated for audio and is not used also as a system drive.

Whatever you are doing you will need decent EQ. As it stands at the moment for Mix+ systems that means the Sony Oxford EQ plug although it is a bit DSP hungry. Second choice would be McDSP's filterbank. Compression is another must have and I would take a close look at the Bomb Factory plugs, the 1176 is my personal favorite. Although Sony is soon to bring out a compressor plug that looks set to raise the standards much higher. If you want a good reverb your best bet is to go for a high quality outboard unit, although Digi's Reverb One plug is excellent and comes closest to providing high quality reverb from a plug. As far as other plugs are concerned that will depend largely on the type of music you are working with. I know it's pricy but if you've got to do any mastering or even pre-mastering, Waves L2 plug is wicked.

You don't have to use an 888 or 882, you could directly interface an Apogee converter or better still a Prism ADA8, depending on your budget of course. I don't believe though you can go direct in with a Rosetta to a TDM system. You could even use one of the numerous third party converters with an ADAT Bridge. Using say an RME or Cranesong converter is a method favoured by a lot of PT TDM users that don't have the budget for a really high end converter.

Lastly the number of mix farm cards you will need depends largely on the number and DSP usage of the plugs you will be using. Using a lot of Sony EQ, Reverb One and say 1176 instances will soon max out a Mix+ setup.
