I am going to be recording an upright bass for a rockabilly/ska type band. The bass has a pickup and he plays thru a GK amp and a GK 4X10 cabinet. I don't think I will have a hard time capturing the low end, but I am not sure what I should do to capture that signature rockabilly snap from the strings. . Would simply Micing the strings with a condenser do it or is there a better method?

Sweet, I looked all around on this forum and another forum to see if anybody had been talking about this already. Thanks for the links, thats pretty much just what i needed.....I don't have the type of mic selection most of these guys are talking about, but I think I will be able to work it out.

There's so much of the instrument that it's no too difficult to get an acceptable sound even if all you do is point an SM57 at the fingerboard about 12-15 inches above the bridge. What you may find is trouble in keeping low end sound from the bass amp out of the mics for the other instruments. Get the bass player to keep his amp volume as low as possible and bring it up with the PA if need be. If the bass has a DI or clip-on mic fitted, take a track from that and blend it with the bass amp and fingerboard mic at mixdown.

Personally I use a QTC50 point near the bridge slighty towards the F-hole.
