I'm going to purchase a new module. I'll be using ddrum triggers on an acoustic kit, and going via midi into pro tools. I'm not sure if there is latency on these machines, but I want it to be as accurate as possible. I don't need any onboard sounds. That being said, which module would be the best, if any of these, and why.

Roland TMC-6: $200, guitar center
Roland TD-3: $200, ebay
Roland TD-10: $450 used, guitar center
Alesis D4: $150, ebay
Alesis DM5: $200, ebay
Yamaha DTX 2.0: $200. ebay

any input is appreciated!

I like the TD10.

The DM5 probably does have some input settings worth the extra $50 over the D4.
I have a D4 and it does work fine.

No experience with a TMC-6 ??
DTX2.0 is that a full kit ? ... pads and all.

and none of this is about sound quality or usefullness of the samples

the tmc-6 is a newer roland module thats basically just a trigger to midi converter. no onboard sounds. its mainly used for an expansion module if you want to add more inputs to a kit on another module. if that makes sense..

and the dtx2.0 isn't the full kit, its just the brain module. somebody on ebay is parting out his set and has it separate.

thanks for your input!

yes it does make sense

does the tmc-6 have the hi-hat functionality of the Vdrums stuff ?

cos basic sound modules may not be able to get the splash and choke thing happening.
... even so this tmc-6 may be cool at the price if it has enough inputs for you.

I must point out that
... when recording midi drums to ProTools I tend to use the D4 sounds for monitoring.
The all over latency of trig to midi to PT to soft drums is tooo long.

those are great points, thank you. i actually won't be using the hi-hat functions at all, as i'll be using overhead mic's to do those analog. i'm mainly concerned with triggering on the kick, snare, and toms.

the monitoring latency point also made me second guess.. but since i'll be triggering an acoustic drum kit (as opposed to electronic pads), i dont think that i'll need to monitor the drums at all. i'll just play a click track through the headphones and the drummer willl be able to hear their own drumset.

what do you think? and thank you, once again.
