Hi there

I know, this has been asked before, and I have read many of the good answer about the topic. You guys are really great!

I am in the market for a single channel preamp for my little project studio. I make demos of my own stuff.

Currently I use my mackie's 1202 preamps (old vlz serie, not the Pro) and/or a behr***er dirty little thing (MIC100), I got a RODE NT3 and a SM58, will soon get a NT1000 or a SP C1.
Generally speaking I'm not very fond of "swiss army knife" devices, I mean, if I want a compressor and eq, then I'll buy them later on, or manage with what I have. .

My specific situation is

1 it will be used on nearly everything, vocals, bass, acoustic, even electric guitar as I have to record it direct to not bother the neighbors.
2 Can't invest more that 4-500$ . I'd love to get myself some Sebatron , Grace or Sytek but. I have to be budget-aware.

So far I have checked the following out.

M-audio DMP3
RNP
Mindprint DI-mod or Envoice MKII
Focusrite Voicemaster Pro
Studio Projects VBT1
Joemeek (new products later this year)

One last remark: as I live in Europe, it would be a plus, if you recommend gear that I can purchase from here (the shipping and custom vat truly makes the final cost grow).

Thanks in advance.

We recently got a Presonus Eureka Channel Strip in our group. While I have not gotten a chance to really put it through its paces in the studio, its working great as a bass frontend for live.It has a lot of very good things in its build, variable mic impedance, full tilt compressor, and EQ.Stay tuned as I will be giving it the complete trial this month and posting a review as well as some samples. Its also a mid-priced unit so I will be a bit harsh on it to see if it makes the grade.

Just curious to what your impression of that MIC100 is.
It's deliberaty colouring, right ?

For around 50 EU it can't be not much I guess (probably a simple opamp-based mic pre with perhaps a few discetes before it and then followed by a starved plate triode ?) but at the same time, if it has _any_ use for a certain source then 50 is not much and makes an other micpre available again for other sources.

Thanks,

Peter> as you wrote, one can't really be disappointed by it, given the price tag. It colors the sound, I only like that effect on some rockabilly bass lines I did few week ago. I think I'll keep it as a cheapo DI-box for small gigs and save for a real valve unit, as a Joemeek or TL Audio.

Thanks for the info. Right, stuff like this will find a use but won't do it all.

Thanks,

Peter
