Can someone fill be in on the whole 2100 vs 2700 memmory?

What speed do they run at?

I have read at Tomshardware that the only way to tap the full potential of the p4 is to go with rambus?

Also, I have read that the next gen. fsb is worth waiting for but the article didn't say which fsb was next gen. so is the 533 worth getting or should we hold out?

If i find out answers to either of these questions, I'll post.

Well, something better is *always* around the corner! It gets to a point where you just need to bite the bullet and do something (stop waiting) or else you'll be waiting forever.

As per Tomshardware, the roadmap for Intel does not include Rambus as of this next year. The next-gen Intel chipsets are based on ddr-2700(333) ram, so my guess is Intel is working on a hot new memory controller.

I just ordered my parts yesterday and I went with a DDR solution over Rambus. I think for DAW purposes, DDR is a fine choice.

I went with:

2.4 533mhz Northwood CPU
Asus P4B533 i845E
Corsair 512mb PC2700 CAS 2

For the time being I'll continue to use my "old" drives (Ibm 75gxp's) which I've been completely happy with and my same gfx card and cdrw.

In a month or two, when I pick up a UAD card, I'll go ahead and change the drives over to the WD 120 JB's people seem to rave over.

In hindsight, if I wanted to squeeze every last drop outta the system, I should have gone with the 845G chipset, but I have a feeling right at the end of the year or shortly after, Intel is going to have a "killer" DDR solution based around DDR2700 to replace the i850E chipsets that will be discontinued.

At that point, I wont be too upset about buying a new board that I can get several years use out of.

Anywhich way you cut it, what I'm getting is so far beyond what I'm coming from, this system will easily last me another 3 years as this old one has.

It's sooo much fun getting new toys! :D

So does the ASUS P4B533V allow PC700 to run at 166? At asus.com it doesn't list pc2700 for that board.

Toms hardware seems to support the 850 chipset. But rambus is so damn expensive.

P4T533 w/ 512 RD1066 -> $680
P4B533 w/ 512 DDR2100 -> $498
P4B533V w/ 512 DDR2700 -> $540

Seems like the DDR2700 is the better route.
However, I have some DDR2100 laying around so that might be a nice way to save some cash, or either go to 1gig.

Decisions Decisions.. ;)

Overall I'm pretty happy going the P4B533 route...

I'm sure they'll be something better then the P4B533-V be the end of the year, in which case, I'll sell the one I'm getting and get whatever the new one is.

If not, I'll still be happy! :)

2.4ghz is a pretty big step up from 800mhz slot one (pc60 ram!!).

yeah, the straight 845E chipset does not officially support 333mhz ddr-ram.

It's odd, I just read this article on Tomshardware, to quote it a little:

"The 845G is traveling along similar lines right now. While the chipset possesses the technology to work with DDR333 memory, Intel is taking its time in validating it, prompting many motherboard manufacturers to offer the feature as an overclocking option."

Now is this just the 845G boards or would this BIOS tweak make it into the 845E boards too?

I'm not perfectly clear on this...

I went ahead and bought CAS 2 pc2700 ram anyway.

curious as to how that set up will run against a dual mp 1900 or higher system because i can build either system for about the same price but would figure that the dual cpu set up would out perform the intel. for those not to familiar with dual mp systems, it incorporates a south bridge that can seperate the work load to perform tasks more efficiently. i saw one user in this forum that seemed to have good results. any input on it? please all the input you can give because i'm trying to decide on how to build my new system.

yeah...A bunch of Nuendo people have been waiting for that card to come out...if I had the real estate available on my desk for a third monitor I would go that route as well...imagine the possibilities!! Dedicated ***er screen, track screen and a vst or effect screen!!!!

Now, as far as the AMD goes...what's the FSB on those nowadays? With the mainboard at 533, the processor at 533 and memory at 333 for an Intel board that is slamming fast!
Yeah, pricey indeed but any new processor or component is expensive at first...part of the whole technological advancement race!

well sadly amd so far only went up to 333 :( but even though the intel chips are faster, wouldn't the dual processing give me more stability when ***ing down alot of audio tracks with effects and @ 24/96?

oh and on the regards to the parhelia and 3d gaming, I CAN'T WAIT!!! looks like alot of fun but curious on what games will be supported, but on the musical aspect... yeah opus, lots of possibilities!!! :D would help to have a dedicated ***er screen for once.
