I have a DAT recorder: Sony PCM- M1 and had a Technica AT 822 that was stolen. Keeping in mind this is for portable use that fits in my hand or close to that size.
I was going to just buy another mic, but wouldn't mind moving away from the DAT. I ran across a Zoom H4 that looked interesting. Anyone have any thoughts on it? Any other ideas? Price isn't the issue, just quality and small.
I use this for:
1. recording music at live recitals.
2. lessons of the instrument I play.
3. recording myself for demo CDs to send to clients.
4. for my website recordings for all to hear that have interest in hiring me.

It's not a bad place to ask, but the Acoustic Music forum would be the better place (since the guys over there are pretty much all orchestral instrumentalists and recordists.
That being said, I would strongly recommend the Korg MR-1000. It's a little pricy, but it's an amazing piece of hardware. The mic preamps that are built in are pretty darn nice. I've used them with condensers and ribbons with no problems.
Add a Rode NT4 and you're in business with a great sounding package for probably less than what you paid for your original DAT.
