Hi all,
Last week I recorded an old school jazz band, I know them well
Sax/clarinet, piano, bass, guitar/banjo, drums/congo
But this time they played outside,
lovely warm evening, but
occasionally some wind
recorded ortf with pair oktava mk012 card
result: distortion when there was some wind
next time I want to do better, or cancel the recording if they're playing outside again
anyone suggestions for outdoor acoustic recording?
Thanks & cheers

I've done a LOT of outdoor recordings. I can honestly say, I HATE doing them, but I get a decent amount of business from them. When I do record them, I try to use omnis where possible since they're not as succeptible to wind noise. However, cardioids work just fine with good wind filters. In general, wind screens are rated for different wind speeds. The average ones will help with winds up to around 5 MPH. Higher end ones can get significantly higher but they become greatly more expensive.
For most purposes, 5 MPH wind screens work just fine and can be had for very little money. Markertek sells these for only a few bucks a piece.

For what you're describing, I'd do close mics as well, along with the stereo pair. You're just not going to get the right amount gain-before-wind, otherwise.
Another trick I picked up after all my other winds screens left me wanting more was wool socks from the Walking Shoe Company. I get the black, double-lined wool/cotton blend walking socks and put 'em right over the whole body of the mic. Saved my butt several times on choirs mics and other outdoor orchestral madness in the wind. Very little hi-freq loss as well. I keep a pair with my outdoor kit (58's and things) and break 'em out whenever it gets windy.
really good wind gags! what is the purpose of recording them ou
really good wind gags!
what is the purpose of recording them outdoors? for prosperity or do they want to sell the recordings?
