I'm considering buying a preamp does dbx 386 is a good one?
It has an A/D converter, will it improve the quality of a Gina of Echo soundcard?or should I look for a better preamp with EQ or compressor but no converter?

Hi Issar,
I have the 286 Channel Strip by dbx and I think the 386 uses the same preamp (but, don't take my word for that). The 286 is not very good to be honest. Quite muddy and lacks clearness and detail. Check out the Mindprint preamps. They are said to be good and also have digital outputs available, though I've not heard them yet.
Regards,
Markus

If you get your paycheck from DBX, it's the balls. If you're trying to get anything that resembles actual audio to come out of it...you're fucked.

Look for something better...yeah, it slices, it dices, it'll wash your car, change your shorts, change your life, change you into a 9 year old Hindu boy...and they're only 3 for a dollar!! OK, the majority of that was a Tom Waits quote, but I think you get the picture.
It's a cheap assed piece of shit. It sounds like shit, it works like shit, and in the long run will cost you a hell of a lot more than saving up and getting good tools.
If this thing only lasts you a year before you realize it's a turd with rack ears...but it costs less to get into than real gear...but that "real gear" will last you an entire career...when you get to the end of that career, which will have cost you more per year to have owned? The one you only used for a year instead of the one you used for 20 or so years.
Does this make any sense?
Issar, What is your budget and what are you recording? Nathan
