I am trying to narrow down the problem...

I have tried switching power jacks and turning off my monitor (which helped reduced guitar noise) but it didn't reduce this background line in noise.

Is it simply because my sound card is weak? I have a built in sound max ac97' standard sound card.

I've tried switching cables and messing with power sources and I tried my roomates laptop but I still get that background buzz...probably from the computer. Will a boss noise suppressor cut down the noise, or do I have to upgrade my sound card or guitar preamp like a line6 port? I prefer going in to the line in because I live in an apartment and I can't always record ideas at 3am at a decent enough level.
I like using my line 6 amp, it has great distortion and a decent clean so I'm wondering if there's a way of keeping my line 6 as the lineout pre while still achieving a clean source?

also, will a good preamp get rid of computer/electrical noise?
(Another topic I'd like to cover is quiet computer components...I'll post in the computer section.)

cheers

Get an interface, onboard sound cards like yours and Soundblasters and all that are for gaming and watching movies...

They are noisy, they suck, they are cheap and built for the masses to enjoy multi-medea. Not to make it.

Get an interface.

A preamp amps the signal from mic level to line level, you then need to convert this to digital to get it into your PC. You need a good pre and a good converter or you will suffer with the noise.

The one sure bet to eliminate that annoying noise is a book on electronics & finishing school. But I wouldn't know about that as at 53 I still haven't finished high school. Instead, I want to work for a college radio station when I was 15 & had a two day per week show. Even though I never went to college. Not sure what this means exactly? Probably means I'm an audio engineer/broadcaster? I certainly don't want to grow up and am trying not to. You probably shouldn't either? Adulthood is highly overrated.
