Don't if you're doing it for profit.

With any music related field....start doing it because you love to do it and not because you want to make a fortune. Get/maintain a steady job, use the money you make with the label as supplemental income, and take it as far as you can. That is what I'm doing with my home studio and I'm coming to the point that I should be able to record full time in a year or so.
