Welcome to the ANUS club! :)
I've just built my first DAW... with a lot of help from my friends here at RO... I'm doing the "Opus-tweaks" at the moment.
It seems like a good shopping-list you got there.
(Dead Link Removed)
Case and PSU...
Case,tower or rack?
PSU, Enermax got some nice and silent ones.
Soundcard... well I've bought RME Hammerfall, haven't used it yet... but I have friends that are very satisfied with that soundcard.
But you need to get AD/DA-converter for it since it's only digital i/o on that card.
Good luck

Case and power supply ...
[[url=http://[/URL]="http://www.newegg.c…"]Antec[/]="http://www.newegg.c…"]Antec[/]
You can find them for about $20 less on Pricewatch, but if it were me I'd pay Newegg's price. I've learned my lesson about buying from some of the unscrupulous companies who list on Pricewatch. I've made purchases from Newegg several dozen times, and I've NEVER regretted it. Your order is proceesed and shipped very quickly, FedX ZOOMS it to your house, and everything is well-packaged. If you get a defective part, there's NO hassle, and the total return time is VERY fast. If you wanna save the $20 ... you can ... but you do so AT YOUR OWN RISK! Don't say I didn't warn you. LOL
OS ... XP Pro.
Sound Card ... talk to OPUS. I'm not even going to "go there" with him around.

Thanks for your replies. Tore and SoS.

Regarding the WD 120 vers the WD 80 Does that post still hold true now that WD has come out with the 8mb cash on all there JB modle drives?

i noticed that Opus has been excited about the wd 40 with 8mb cash.

and yes i am ordering this entire rig from newegg which has given me a price comperable to my reseller friend who clames he can get every thing real cheep... i also checked otheres on pricewatch. newegg looks good.

I didn't go back and reference the post, but I believe OPUS had said that there were issues with the 80 and 100 Gb models, but later posted that the issue was rectified. So, apparently the new ones leaving the factory are okay, but some retailers may still have some of the questionable ones sitting on their shelves.
IMO, best deal going right now is the WD 120Gb Special Edition at Newegg for $149.99. Let's face it ... you can always use more storage. They were $200 not so long ago!
As for the 40Gb model ... well ... not sure. I looked at the Newegg site for the price ... $86 ... but I was surprised to see that it has a one star rating average of two voters. I'm going to definately do some investigating to see if people are having problems with this drive. We sure as heck can't be recommending a problematic drive!

Well, I've been bashing my 40GB pretty hard and it's rock solid..performing like a champ I tell you! Go for it! It's the best thing you can do for your PCI performance..that and the 120GB for audio data...8MB cahce all around only gives you more horsepower in the long run.
Also welcome to the Anus club! It's a fun one to be in! You'll be hearing lots of puns..both old and new based on that name!
XP Pro is considered the best out there so far. I've heard one person say that the performance of Win2k is better than XP but I'm not so sure about it...I'll have to try a performance test myself one of these days but I'm not so keen on doing the multiple OS switcharoo drive thing just to test it...I'm happy with XP's performance and stability..that's what matters the most.
HTH and enjoy your filthy Anus! hee hee
