How are these plugins? I can't afford WAVES and I don't use pirated software. so is this a good buy? If anyone could tell me the pros/cons I'd really appreciate it!
Also, I'm looking for nicely priced ($400-$600) for a pair of powered 8 inch monitors. I use 5 inch Samson with a Samson sub and I have a hard time mixing with a sub. Any suggestions? I've listened to the KRK Rocket 8's against the comparable powered Event monitors, and they both "shine" in different ways.

The UAD-1 plugs are pretty widely accepted as being of a great quality, and you won't see many negative comments (I have TWO cards!).
I still find uses for my Waves plugs, although as mentioned, the UA plugs are usually first call for most uses.
Beware that if you buy the UA "Project Pak", you will not get the 1176LN or LA2 compressors, plus, the extra charge for Dreamverb (no big loss imho), Cambridge EQ (awesome!), the Fairchild compressor, and the Pultec Pro EQ.

This community is awesome! Thank you guys so much for all the help you've given me over the few weeks I've been here. The reality is that I'm a 22 year old guy that has to work full time to support his mother which leaves me unable to afford to go to school for audio (time/money wise). I've found that I'm learning a hell of a lot of things you won't learn in a text book that you need to know if you're behind a board. This community and my trial/error are my schooling...I appreciate the help.

Get some books anyway - I certainly don't feel bad about not "going to school" for audio, but there is certainly an advantage to having and understanding of the science behind the sound.
Anything by Alton F. Williams...
Mastering Audio by Bob Katz (which really isn't about audio mastering in general) is a great source of info that you'll use on an everyday basis.
There's goatta be a thread around here somewhere...

Although I don't rely heavily on plugins, the UAD collection are (by FAR) my favorite plugs. I've hardly touched the Waves stuff since I installed the UAD-1 card.
Pro's - Great sound, wonderful character, about as close to "real" as you're going to get without spending an absolute fortune. On-board DSP, classic hardware emulation and the Pultec plug - Easily worth twice the price of the entire collection all by itself.
Con's - If you're married, you're spouse will hate you.
Monitors: Geez, there are so many... Two of my faves in that price range would be M-Audio's BX8's (you MUST read the manual to set them up correctly - They get a bad rap on low end, but most people I know have had the A.S. switch set up backwards) and the Wharfedale Diamond 8.2 - VERY inexpensive, and one of the best kept secrets in sound.
