Well, my Mac came with OS 9.0.2, and all of the updates from there are free. I'm not sure about 8.6, but I'm guessing that your updates are free, also, on the Apple site. However, upgrading will have to be done a step at a time. First you have to D/L 9.0.2, then 9.1, then 9.2.1, then the current version, 9.2.2.
I have a couple of other things to do right now, but I'll check to see if OS 8.6 is eligible for free updates. If so, I'll post the links here for you in 2 or 3 hours.

Welll ... I have some bad news and some good news.
I cruised the Apple site. Apparently, there isn't an update available to you. After 8.6, the next update they have is 9.0.4, and it says it requires OS9.
The good news is that I found you a good deal on OSX! Instead of paying $82 for OS9, at MacMall you can buy OSX for $119.94, then there's a $25 rebate that brings it down to $94.94. Rebate offer expires 4-30-02.

OS9.1 isn't bad, but if you update it, you'll find a MAJOR improvement. From 9.1, you update to 9.2.1, then from there you update to 9.2.2, the current version. I had previously read that OS9.2.1 was going to be the final Mac Classic OS version, but then 9.2.2 came out (?). Anyway, it's highly probable that 9.2.2 is the final version. A few days ago, Microsoft announced that they won't be upgrading any of their Mac Classic OS products anymore, only providing any possible bug fixes. However, they are very commited to the OSX platform, so that's a good thing.
Anywho, here's your links...

Also, while you're on the Apple site, check for updates for your OSX.
Oh, and speaking of Microsoft ... how would you like to make every minute that you spend at your computer more productive, efficient, and pleasant? Treat yourself to the Microsoft Office Keyboard and Microsoft Trackball Optical. You have to download the Mac drivers off of their site, but that's simple, of course. These make a HUGE difference ... like night and day!
OH! ... and GOOD LUCK!

Thanks again SonOfSmawg,
I am not sure that 9.2.x is compatible with Pro Tools? I have the Mix Plus and just ordered my upgrade today, from version 5.0.1 to 5.1
I'm gonna try 9.1 and see how it goes, and maybe if I feel real daring, I'll try going to 9.2.2
Thanks.

OK, here's where I'm at right now: Just got OS X delivered, it came with OS 9.2.1 (it was supposed to come with 9.1). Still waiting for my Pro Tools upgrde to 5.1 to arrive.
My system is a 9600/350 W/Newer G3 500/250 upgrade card
Miro Motion DC 30 plus
Adaptec 2940 UW
ixmicro dual monitor card
Orangemicro USB/firewire card (not installed yet)
Anyone have a similar system? Will I have problems with OS 9.2.1? (I'll get the upgrade to 9.2.2 right away).
Maybe I'll just dive in and see if I can get it all working.
Any more suggestions?
Thanks everyone!

I hate to suggest that you "go into the bad part of town", but have you tried the digidesign users group? It's a nightmare on there, but you should be able to find out if anyone is having any problems running 9.2.1 or 9.2.2. Just be very careful, and you might want to wear a sidearm! LOL
Hi SonOfSmawg, I actually came from "the bad part of town".
Hi SonOfSmawg,
I actually came from "the bad part of town". Someone there suggested I check out RO. I've been posting on the DUC for a couple of years, and on RO for maybe a month. OS 9.2.x is not supported on my 9600 (G3 upgrade and all)! I'm in a bit of a bind, cause I ordered my OS X which was supposed to include os 9.1 CD, but it came with OS 9.2.1 CD, and I did something stupid, I opened the box! MacMall won't take it back, and I've been trying to speak to a manager there to see if they have any of the OS 9.1 OS X's around so I can swap.
Gotta get OS 9.1 or even earlier OS 9 for my computer. I'm going to try MacMall again and see if I can't talk to a manager there.
Wish me luck!
