hello all,

I was wondering what kind of mixing effect was used in this particular song. The group is called killswitch engage and the song is called arms of sorrow. there is this effect that is used right before the snare hits and i wanted to learn how to do that in song i am mixing at the moment.

Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAk_ZpW84_s
it happens between 2:35 and 2:38.

I think it is a reverse reverb tirck but not sure. Any ideas?

Which particular effect are you asking about? There is so much going on in that preface. First of all there are layers of what might be either volume swells, a synth pad or possibly an ebow. These also may be reversed. I'm not entirely sure. I'm thinking that it's simply volume swells though.

There is some pretty deep reverb going on as well. The whole thing is a wash. There may be some delay.

There are two guitar tracks on top of the swells. One strummed. One picked.

The other thing that is all too blatant is that the whole track is just crushed with a limiter. It's not funny. I don't know if the original track is like this or if the poster thought he might "fix" the track. I can't imagine they would release a track sounding that bad. Yeah bad.

Yeah it is definitely volume swells. You track the guitar strumming the chord and then reverse it and put it behind the melody guitars, the effect is a reverse decay that completely defies anything your ear is used to hearing. Again at 2:30-2:40 ish there is a reverse snare hit done the same way. You track a single snare hit and I believe there is a ton of reverb put on it to make it decay over like 3 seconds. Reverse it and mix it before the actual snare hit.

Cool technique that can add a lot to a musical buildup.

BTW hueseph, such is the sound of internet streaming. Press the HD button on the bottom of the Youtube video viewer. The song really isn't limitedthat hard... at least not much more than any other song of a similar style :

thanks for the reply!

I was actually talking about the snare hit. I was trying to get a similar build up but the guitar thing is cool too. I agree that it is very smashed but i would have to agree that it happens a lot in that genre....and the loudness war continues!

thanks i appreciate it.
