EQ, reverb, maybe a better preamp, mic or recording space? A tube pre would definitely help too. Experiment with it.

Try backing off the compressor. It sounds more like a matter of too much in the mix than a matter of warm or cold.

You could also try backing away from the mic to begin with. Proximity will increase presence. Compressing only compounds that.

thanks for the good tips. i'll have to give them a try here. i did pick up a tube pre so hopefuly that helps out also. if not at least it will give me a better handle on the db's going in. i'll let you know what i find out. thanks again for your time

You're going to have the same problems. This is a situation where condenser microphones aren't necessarily the correct choice. I can say with absolute certainty that he'll have better results with a SM58. Really it's true. I've done lots of live television & radio and that's what we use. Watch any musical television show and you'll hear what I'm talking about. They're not using condenser microphones on the vocals. Steve Tyler was not recorded with a condenser microphone. Bono was not recorded with a condenser microphone. Michael Jackson was not recorded with a condenser microphone. Anymore questions?
