when recording a singer for a R&B song, how should it be layered? (ie. dubs, back ups, adlibs, etc.. ) i typically just record hip hop vocals but now I'm wanting to move on to R&B songs, i just want to be able to do it right.
That's why they call it an art form. so there's really no wrong way of doing it as long as you are pleased with the end product.
That being said this is how i would do it:
assuming you already have the song recorded and you are just laying down vocals.
1. I would lay down the main vocal track several times, that way you can use different part from different takes if you need to.
2. do the adlibs after the main vocal if the it's the same talent as the main vocal. no sense in having the talent come back into the studio again if you can get it all in one visit.
3. Do your backup vocals and any extra effects/fine tuning last.
Try to lay down all your tracks before you start editing/mixing/adding effects.
