Well put.

When you're using an EQ for mastering, you're not necessarily trying to "create" a sound, therefore presets are useless.

With any EQ in the mastering chain, one needs to start out with a completely flat line. Then one needs to listen to the source - find out where each track is in reference to the rest of the material, and use the EQ to tie them all together.

Mind you, I'm not talking about going off the deep end and trying to make every song sound exactly the same, just bring coherent flow to the collection of songs. That, after all, is what your first job is.

Of course, if your client is plugged into this "louder than hell" trend, then your first job is to crush every last bit of dynamic out of the whole mess first.
