Hey i just wanted to ask you heavy guys (bill, don, mike, etc) what you think of the Patty Griffin CD Flaming Red and the mastering job. wow, it is screaming. .i am mixing some demo tunes for a girl and the production on it is somewhat like the flaming red stuff,. .wonder if you guys can hear what he did on this. serious comp and heavy in the vocal range of frequencies...is that more mix or what...take a listen too it . it rocks...

No way of knowing who did what. You say the low end is kicking. For all Know the low end was fine to begin whith. Maybe not GM could have really brought out some of the kick with EQ and or comp.

That's what good mastering is about. If it needs it add it. If it's to much take some away. If it's great leave it alone. I have a lot a respect for George Marino's work so I'm sure it does sound great. What he did to one song is not necessarily the same thing for the next. The trick is to get it to sound like they all have the same top and bottom!

I think your question leans towards the same question I get a lot. What do you do? As if there is a specific EQ curve that we slap on all records. It doesn't work that way. You have to listen to every song on it's own. Then see how it works with the rest of the tracks. It's a lot more work (to do it well) than one might think.

I was almost tempted to not reply to this only because the other guys gave absolutely fine answers.

George Marino is a real PRO. If you liked it that much, I'm sure he did just what was required to get it there.

The only wqy to guess about how it got there would MAYBE to know the "sound"the producer generally favors, how her (Patti's) previous albums sounded perhaps with other producers/studios/engineers. And then guess.

There is no stock answer....
