Here's one for you mastering gurus..I did some (what I thought were..) quick n' dirty demos for someone, which had been given to the clients in 2 versions; i.e. one of the raw unedited mixes, and one disc which had been maximized with an L2, etc for a listening copy...most definitely NOT mastered ! These of course are the only versions the band can find, plus the multitrack has gone walkies with an ex member..Now, they want to use these alongside some more recent stuff for which I have way better raw masters for on their indie release. I kind of think these tracks will be unusable..would YOU tackle them ? (And can you think of anyone in the UK who is mad enough to do it ?)

Just to put my 2cents in, as Brad said if it's all you have and thats what the artist wants you have no choice but to make the best of it. It's a good lesson to learn that the client should listen to the raw unaltered mix. I see no good reason to make the mixes louder just for listening to see if they are happy with them.

The fact that it is on a medium that is considered suitable for mastering is a good start. I would have thought that it could be made to fit in with the rest of the album even though it might be slightly sonically compromised.
Just be thankful that you've got more than a cassette recorded from AM radio to work from (or has anyone else here had something worse?).
